    What we fix

Find the problem that matches yours to see what usually causes it, then book a visit with it filled in.

    • The fresh-food side is warm

The freezer may still feel cold while the refrigerator side warms up. That usually points to an airflow problem, not a dead refrigerator.

      Common causes

      • Evaporator or condenser fan not running
      • Iced-over evaporator coils from a failed defrost system
      • Dirty condenser coils
      • A stuck air damper, or a failed control board or temperature sensor
      Book this repair
    • Frost or ice is building up

Thick frost on the freezer walls, or ice on the back panel, usually means the defrost system has stopped doing its job.

      Common causes

      • Defrost heater, thermostat or sensor
      • Defrost control board
      • A worn door gasket letting humid air in
      Book this repair
    • There’s water on the floor

Water under or in front of the refrigerator usually comes from the defrost drain or the water supply, and it can damage flooring if it keeps going.

      Common causes

      • Clogged or frozen defrost drain
      • Water inlet valve or supply line
      • Cracked water filter housing
      Book this repair
    • The ice maker stopped

No ice, tiny cubes or a jammed tray usually trace back to the water supply or the ice maker itself.

      Common causes

      • Frozen fill tube
      • Failing water inlet valve or a clogged filter
      • Ice maker module or motor
      Book this repair
    • The freezer isn’t freezing

Soft ice cream and thawing food point to a cooling problem that affects the whole appliance.

      Common causes

      • Condenser fan or evaporator fan failure
      • Heavy frost on the evaporator
      • Compressor start relay or compressor
      Book this repair
    • It’s loud or never shuts off

Buzzing, clicking or a compressor that never rests often means a fan or cooling component is struggling.

      Common causes

      • Fan motor wearing out, or a fan blade hitting ice
      • Dirty condenser coils forcing it to work harder
      • Compressor start components

    Is your refrigerator worth repairing?

Most of the time, yes. Many refrigerators last well over a decade, and the most common failures, like fans, defrost parts, water valves, ice makers, door gaskets and control boards, are far cheaper to fix than replacing the whole appliance.

A common rule of thumb: if a repair costs less than about half the price of a comparable new refrigerator, and the rest of the appliance is in good shape, repairing it is usually the better choice. The calculation changes for an older, basic model with a failed compressor or a refrigerant leak, where a replacement can make more sense.

After the diagnosis, your technician explains what failed, what it takes to fix it and whether it’s worth doing, so you can decide with the real numbers in front of you.

    Before your technician arrives

    • Keep the doors closed as much as possible to hold the cold in, and move the most perishable food to a cooler.
    • Find the model number. It’s usually on a label inside the fresh-food section, on a side wall.
    • Leave the refrigerator plugged in so your technician can see the problem happen. If it’s leaking near an outlet, sparking or smells of burning, unplug it and tell us when you book.
    • Please don’t chip away at ice on the back panel. It’s easy to puncture the coils behind it.

    What the visit costs

The diagnostic visit is $89 for residential properties and $129 for commercial properties. It covers your technician finding the cause and explaining your repair options. The cost of the repair itself depends on the part and the work involved, and your technician goes over it with you after the diagnosis.

I had three different appliance companies come out, and somehow all three managed to look at the refrigerator, scratch their heads, and leave me with more questions than answers… Then Ivan from NordMan Appliance Repair showed up. He actually took the time to diagnose the problem properly. No guessing, no throwing random parts at it. He found the actual problem, explained everything clearly, and fixed it.

Our Sub-Zero refrigerator stopped cooling suddenly, and I was deeply concerned about losing hundreds of dollars in food… The technician was outstanding, very respectful, put on shoe covers, and went straight to work. He diagnosed the Sub-Zero unit in ten minutes, had the factory part ready in his van, and fixed it up properly. Excellent work, fair price, and total peace of mind.

My Thermador refrigerator developed a persistent water leak inside the fresh-food section… The NordMan technicians came out, inspected the evaporator area and defrost system, and traced the problem to a failed evaporator defrost heater. They explained the failure clearly… The refrigerator is now running properly, the fresh-food section is completely dry, and there are no more leaks.

My Viking refrigerator stopped working, and they were able to come out quickly and take care of it. The technician was very professional and efficient. He explained what was wrong, fixed the problem, and didn’t try to sell me anything I didn’t need. The price was also very reasonable, which I really appreciated.

    Refrigerator questions

Why is my refrigerator warm but my freezer still cold?

Because most refrigerators cool the fresh-food side with air that comes from the freezer. If a fan stops, the evaporator ices over or a damper sticks, the freezer stays cold while the refrigerator warms up. Our guide on a refrigerator not cooling while the freezer works walks through the causes.

Do you repair refrigerators with ice and water in the door?

Yes. We repair French-door and side-by-side refrigerators with in-door ice and water, including the ice makers, water valves and dispensers.

Can you come to my garage refrigerator or freezer?

Yes. We repair refrigerators and freezers wherever they are in the home, including garages and outbuildings. Add the location to the notes when you book.
