A clogged vent is a safety issue
Lint that builds up in the vent doesn’t just slow drying. It forces the dryer to run hot, blows thermal fuses and, according to the U.S. Fire Administration, failure to clean is the leading cause of home dryer fires. Clean the lint screen before every load, and have the vent run checked if drying times keep creeping up.
Is your dryer worth repairing?
Nearly always for the common failures. Belts, rollers, idler pulleys, thermal fuses, thermostats and heating elements are all straightforward repairs, and dryers are simple, durable machines. Replacement usually only makes sense when an older dryer needs a major part like a motor or control board and the repair approaches half the price of a comparable new one.
What the visit costs
The diagnostic visit is $89 for residential properties and $129 for commercial properties. It covers finding the cause and explaining your options, including what the repair will involve.
Dryer questions
My dryer runs but doesn’t heat. What should I check first?
Check the lint screen and make sure the outside vent flap opens when the dryer runs. On an electric dryer, check the breaker panel, since one half of the double breaker can trip on its own. Our guide on a dryer not heating covers the rest.
Why does my dryer keep blowing its thermal fuse?
Almost always because the dryer is overheating from a restricted vent. Replacing the fuse without clearing the vent means it will blow again, so your technician checks the airflow too.
