Hard water and your dishwasher
North County San Diego has hard water, and dishwashers show it first. Minerals leave a white film on glasses and slowly clog the small holes in the spray arms. Using rinse aid, cleaning the filter every few weeks and running an occasional cleaning cycle keep scale in check. If the film stays after that, the dishwasher may have a heating or spray problem worth looking at.
Is your dishwasher worth repairing?
For drain pumps, door latches, spray arms, inlet valves and gaskets, usually yes. Replacement makes more sense when the tub itself is leaking or rusted, or when an older, basic dishwasher needs a new control board and the repair approaches half the price of a comparable new one.
What the visit costs
The diagnostic visit is $89 for residential properties and $129 for commercial properties. It covers finding the cause and explaining your options, including what the repair will involve.
Dishwasher questions
My new garbage disposal was installed and now the dishwasher won’t drain. Why?
New disposals come with a knockout plug in the dishwasher inlet. If it wasn’t removed during installation, the dishwasher has nowhere to drain. It’s one of the first things to check in our guide on a dishwasher not draining.
Can I use regular dish soap in my dishwasher?
No. Regular dish soap makes a lot of suds, which can overflow the dishwasher and leak onto the floor. Use detergent made for dishwashers.
